Chuck Jones...I was watching a Bugs Bunny cartoon on DVD. I watched one scene in slow motion and I'll be darned if Bugs didn't show more emotion, didn't go through more changes of expression, in that one scene than some comic characters in a month.

ReplyDeleteIf you look way way in the back of the photograph, you can see me waving. Not in greeting, but in desperation, as I'm going down for the third time, swamped by the vast history of cartoonists who are no longer remembered.

ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite New Yorker cartoon is one by Robert Weber. It's full-page, b&w, and it shows this massive crowd of angels in heaven, billions of them, standing posed on this vast cloudbank that rises out of sight. At the bottom in the foreground is an angel with a camera on a tripod and he's waving at somebody in the posing multitude and saying, "Lucy, move over. You're blocking Pliny the Elder."
