This is an old illustration illustrating what I forget. It was done with ink, colored pencil and alkyd paint applied with a wad of the spongy foam rubber stuff they put under wall to wall carpeting, which was my favorite way of working, till I got sick of the smell of the Krylon spray that I'd use to force it to dry. Watercolor, that's the stuff.
Wow, that's fantastic! I think it is called 'The Insanity of War.'
ReplyDeleteI like the guy with the big hat; he looks like a pirate - and they are never really bad. I like the fun little explosions. I like that the drawing depicts the scene before any body parts are flying, or any blood is flowing.
That's how a real war ought to be!
you painted that with a piece of freakin carpet padding? Or are you just pulling our legs?

ReplyDeleteEvery bit as exciting as one of those 45-min. battlefield set-pieces of Mel Gibson or Peter Jackson. And really, it shows the comparative limitations of these lesser artists that, unlike you, neither has ever contrived to bring together for us a blunderbuss and a bazooka in a single sweeping scene of armed action.

Love this painting - I just had a thought though... has Quentin Blake's work been one of your bigger influences? Not that I'm saying your style isn't unique of course :P

ReplyDeleteAin't it epic? Yeah, I love Q Blake; he's in my top 20 easily. And no kidding about the carpet padding. It's great stuff for glazing.
