This is from '04. It's the first of several series where the classroom guinea pig, Mr. Danders, would get out of his cage, usually by accident, and wander off school property. My favorite bit about this one is that in each episode Danders assumes a new identity. This'll be in the Cul de Sac book, along with a few other series, so consider this a sneak peek.
Mr Danders clearly deserves his own book.
ReplyDeleteAw, man, how wonderful is that? Is it really another month and a half before the book comes out?
ReplyDeleteO bother, indeed.
Great series. I love the humour.
ReplyDeleteOne part that pops out to me like a beautiful grace note is the watercolour ground in the second-last strip. Beautiful colours!
the winnie the pooh one has a terrific layout. i just noticed the arc that the balloon makes across the strip. simple yet clever.
ReplyDeleteFYI: guinea pigs are actually not from the rodent family at all - they're more closely related to the chinchilla or the porcupine.
ReplyDeleteBut I love Mr. Danders. And Cul de Sac in general.
"Why hello there 'Hilarious'. Can you scoot over and let this picture of Richard Thompson set up permanent residence next to you in the dictionary? That'd be great."
ReplyDeleteLoved the misadventures of Mr. Danders, RT. Sic Semper Mus!
I can't wait to see all the other inadvertent adventures. This one was a real treat!
ReplyDeleteTerribly funny !
ReplyDelete"Oh, I love advertising!" Great Alice quote. I'm going to look a little more closely at sandwich-board wearers from now on.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the most delightful comic sequences I've ever read.
ReplyDeleteWonderful atory arc, Robert! Thanks for showing us why, so early on in its cartoony life, CUL DE SAC was nominated for an NCS Newspaper Comic Strip Award.
ReplyDeleteDo I detect, how shall I say, a certain congruence between Mr Danders and his creator?
ReplyDeleteDanders? Congruence? Check this out.

I was looking for you because we had your comic strip in our paper (in Toronto) for about a month and then they brought Doonesbury back! I miss it as your work is hilarious. Loved the comment "I hate pushy sandwiches". Wonderful. Glad to have found you. I can read some on line.
ReplyDeleteMary
This was probably my favorite series of "Cul de Sac"s ever. Nice to know I'll soon have them in book form.
ReplyDeleteAre we going to get to peruse the Sunday strips in the volume in vivid color?
Simply loved this run!!
ReplyDeleteSpecially liked the globe travel which reminded me of the brasilian priest who travelled with hundreds of baloons.
Saludos!!
Pablo
I missed the strip when Danders found his way back to the classroom, so thank you for this recap.
