Reminder

HeroesCon is only two weeks away, so I'm confident youall have made your travel arrangements for the trip to Charlotte NC. It's three days jam-packed full to the brim with comics fun, and you'll kick youself to the curb if you miss it! That may be their official slogan.

And on Sunday afternoon all the fun comes to a peak when you get this-

SPOTLIGHT ON RICHARD THOMPSON | Room 219
The first great newspaper comic strip of the 21st Century has arrived, and like Mutts and Calvin & Hobbes before it, Richard Thompson's Cul De Sac has spent its first several months in syndication operating just underneath the pop-cult radar, adding papers steadily, readying to break out into the Next Big Thing. Join Tom Spurgeon for a wide-ranging discussion about art, caricature, and the Otterloop Family with one of the best cartoonists in North America, bar none. It's the panel you'll get to brag about attending in the years ahead, after Thompson conquers the comics world.

Frankly, it sounds like the manifesto of a madman to me and I'll be sitting in the back of the room, near an exit, where it's safe.

  1. Richard, let me say upfront that I am almost definitely going to change the time of this panel to some time earlier in the day. It's been driving me nuts that it's so late--no one will come to a panel at 4 on Sunday, because they'll be cruising the floor one last time for deals, or thinking about breaking down their booths, or heck--just plain leaving.

I'm going to find you a slot worthy of "one of the best cartoonists in North America." I don't want an angry mob of your crazed fans burning me in effigy in front of the Charlotte Convention Center.

  2. Hey Dustin, that's cool, I'm up for it whenever. Unless it's 8 a.m.

  4. Richard will be going to bed at about 7 am, Dustin, so that's why he's hoping for something later... like 9:15.

  5. Haw! He'll probably be destroying the hotel room, throwing furniture into the pool, and biting the heads of of goats. Now that he's a star all the rules have gone right out the window...

  6. Not to interrupt the flow of discussion here, but that's a heck of a well-written description! It definitely appeals to the "new and improved" craving that's wired into Americans. Everybody wants to be in on the ground floor of the Next Big Thing.

And if you do change the time, dustin, make sure you make a Giant Huge Deal of it, because SOMEbody is going to miss the change and be pissed off. You just don't want too many somebodies. Or too pissed off.

On-topic, I say schedule the talk for 4:00 am. That way RT will still be awake and roaring in a tequila-fueled frenzy, and all the comic book fanboys will set their alarms for bragging rights. Plus, no conflicts with other talks.

  7. Much better time: 3.30 pm on Friday. That's a WAY better time, and hopefully a bunch of people will show up to learn what we already know!

I'll update our schedule page later today, but the pre-change schedule is here: http://www.heroesonline.com/con-schedule.html

  8. Yikes, 4 am is when the second pot of coffee goes on.

Thanks, Dustin, for the change. I'll trust your well-honed instincts. But I'm still sitting in the back. Tom can yell out the questions, right?

  9. It's actually a complex system of paper airplanes and semaphore flags, but yeah, more or less.
