The Year in Review by Dave Barry, With Added Drawings
The Post Magazine this Sunday has Dave Barry's annual review of world events, and he's not making any of it up. And I got to illustrate it, and illustrating Dave Barry's stuff is like dynamiting fish in a barrel, only more fun and less messy. The hard part is that Dave Barry tends to use up all the good jokes, leaving me scrambling to catch up. Here's the cover and below are some of the inside illustrations. I like the Gore caricature so much I'm showing it twice, because I'm show-offy.
Do you feel that you've reached a sort of milestone in your career, now that you've been able to make a drawing of a woman astronaut in a diaper hefting a barrel of Tang? What a wonderful country this is, that hath such news stories in it.
Very cool, thanks for posting the inside art. Your Gore is worth the double dose. How the heck do you have time to do this, the Almanac and seven days worth of Cul De Sac all at the same time?
He outsources to Hispanic immigrants driven out of neighboring Louden County. These frequently talented cartoonists were usually attempting to make a living drawing sidewalk caricatures of tourists, but they drastically miscalculated the tourist trade in Louden county which usually consists of people who had attempted to go to London, but didn't speak clearly enough when purchasing tickets.
In any event, the entire population of Louden was in an uproar over immigration after having each purchased two or three dozen caricatures of themselves, NONE of which appeared to show their inner beauty.
Richard, seeing a capitalist opportunity, has gathered them in his 'garage', which is actually his secret studio space where he feeds them and provides a constant parade of earlier Post and New Yorker cartoons so they soon can mimic his style with great fluency. At that point, he provides the gag, and goes out to an expense account lunch with Jim Davis.
Ponto, I honestly feel that this is the best woman astronaut in a diaper hefting a barrel of tang I've drawn all year. I hope that doesnt' sosund too chesty.
My younger daughter got mad at me for making fun of Al Gore because he's trying to save the planet. And Leonardo DiCaprio made her even madder, because she likes Titanic. Of course, she used to like George W Bush because he's the president.
Uh-oh, I'm on the verge of the "isn't that cute?" thing mentioned in a previous post...
Looks fab-u-lous, dahling!

That's my business model and I'm sticking to it.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks, Patricia & Nolanart!

This are fracking brilliant. I'm so glad you posted them here. One of my blogging buddies, mike, hates Al Gore. These will terrify him. Hee!

These are wonderful, Richard. I think Gore would like his more slim look you gave him!
