Here's 2 pieces he did this year. The Mr. Danders balloon was photographed when Chris unwrapped the art and unfortunately has a reflection of packing material as a result. I bought the Alice and put it on the scanner when it arrived from Chris this week (we operate on Thompsonish time scales).</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp0nBd7BvbluJKKiEOnq6MxUg9qkvyu64ECGB-Le0XeUjgL28Net_uG4R86XpIQ218cc9QNBy4Lz6Vddt-3h4mT4Qv13TnHPT4-EplP0VAXDYvTv3BM_cumrL9Imp_VKJp9LcemxCyBn2uZujx4W8wh_AkGRjL32gftQRtffq261RAUV2GB0lHIwj7C5U/s6430/CCDS%20Esparza,%20John%20TCDS%202023%20Alice%20copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4698" data-original-width="6430" height="321" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp0nBd7BvbluJKKiEOnq6MxUg9qkvyu64ECGB-Le0XeUjgL28Net_uG4R86XpIQ218cc9QNBy4Lz6Vddt-3h4mT4Qv13TnHPT4-EplP0VAXDYvTv3BM_cumrL9Imp_VKJp9LcemxCyBn2uZujx4W8wh_AkGRjL32gftQRtffq261RAUV2GB0lHIwj7C5U/w439-h321/CCDS%20Esparza,%20John%20TCDS%202023%20Alice%20copy.jpg" width="439" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcuFyJvotUWerhGc3cmiJiDQ_Uq5JjTUUnp2MWp4MmuPiVWDSLD6FSTZeS74cOO6LV4dycqPxMex5m2yiIlPrKRRrZr9P9gNXbSARkmZpFjVszCFwo7xwx10BF6MAzz-DXEJAtek7280qp6TVI3yX39-l33SC2DKggrm5RRQ7HXhVJmySdnRJhyphenhyphensCPNxo/s1153/CCDS%20Esparza,%20John%20TCDS%202023%20Mr%20Danders%20balloon%20at%20shipping.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1153" data-original-width="994" height="385" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcuFyJvotUWerhGc3cmiJiDQ_Uq5JjTUUnp2MWp4MmuPiVWDSLD6FSTZeS74cOO6LV4dycqPxMex5m2yiIlPrKRRrZr9P9gNXbSARkmZpFjVszCFwo7xwx10BF6MAzz-DXEJAtek7280qp6TVI3yX39-l33SC2DKggrm5RRQ7HXhVJmySdnRJhyphenhyphensCPNxo/w332-h385/CCDS%20Esparza,%20John%20TCDS%202023%20Mr%20Danders%20balloon%20at%20shipping.jpg" width="332" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>And a real quick page addenda for your existing book:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3zq61oYRF-sf7ZFbwn4bfXZmR4V5WkoSYQuPmCupePSrtEV78NSc2n4brqruz8_GlId5Mvs9XkWC7MTGwspS2AhKsVBUA_aqub2YMg_HZ5xWou9eRb7N8BypjxL-bAVzb-UcCBMcp5X-Mbps9SjWZ7ckQoX7xFA4cBP9WK2z1XZr45Ad4SbNByonuBx4/s12573/CCDS2%202023%20Esparza%20addenda.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="12573" data-original-width="9716" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3zq61oYRF-sf7ZFbwn4bfXZmR4V5WkoSYQuPmCupePSrtEV78NSc2n4brqruz8_GlId5Mvs9XkWC7MTGwspS2AhKsVBUA_aqub2YMg_HZ5xWou9eRb7N8BypjxL-bAVzb-UcCBMcp5X-Mbps9SjWZ7ckQoX7xFA4cBP9WK2z1XZr45Ad4SbNByonuBx4/s320/CCDS2%202023%20Esparza%20addenda.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Mike Rhodehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14551914909843150387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-71396653635139349332023-10-11T07:38:00.000-07:002023-10-11T07:39:07.990-07:00New book from Richard's friends Watterson and Kascht<div dir="ltr"><div>They met as we were all working on The Art of Richard Thompson. I
think Richard told me it was his first actual cash payment for art. (I
paid him a pack of Twinkies and a Coke for an Atilla the Hun's Birthday
Party announcement.- And I keep looking for that - it was a great
looking Attila wearing a cone party hat and using a party blower.) <div><br /></div><div>This
is pretty much a year out of high school I think. The original menu is
on blue paper - it doesn't reproduce well. BUT LOOK AT THOSE FACES.
What a talent. (Signature below Woody Allen) <div><br /></div><div> The Delly in Rockville moved, and moved yet again, and then was gone. But
the best was when Richard and a few other friends came to visit me when
I was at Uni in Florida. We went to Disney World (of course) and
stopped for lunch/brunch on the way. At the exit in the North Orlando
area, we saw a shopping center and pulled in. There was a sign for
"Celebrity Delly" so we thought "what a hoot - let's go." Inside, down
the wall, was the mural Richard had painted at the Rockville location.
Except copied. And copied BADLY. We were laughing so much we could
hardly eat. I think we found out the one in Orlando was run by a cousin of the owner in Rockville. </div><div><br /></div><div> That
was the trip where Richard couldn't contain himself at Disney. At one
point, he pointed at the mouse head cast into the sewer lid and shouted:
"A cartoonist did all this! ALL THIS! The POWER!!!"</div><div><br /></div><div>My goodness I miss that man."</div></div>Mike Rhodehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14551914909843150387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-52229031228148751672022-12-28T19:53:00.006-08:002023-01-09T06:51:17.358-08:00Compleating Cul de Sac 2nd edition's Addenda<p> Even as we were going to print, we kept finding material on this blog that would fit in the book. Complete, that is. Compiling it while ill, Richard accidentally left out some strips. Others were purposely left out, either because he had redrawn them for syndication, or they were too tied to the Washington, D.C. origins of the strip to make sense for a worldwide audience, or he "just felt some were not funny." Over 100 are not in The Complete CDS. But if you're a cartoon completist, or just want a little bit more CDS, we understand and we're here for you. We've collected the lost water-colored Washington Post Magazine strips, the early inchoate musings about what the strip should be, the promotional material, the sketches for fans, and finally some fugitive Team Cul de Sac charity art. This whole book is about community—the people that loved Richard and CDS and what he gave to us and what we tried to give back to him. As Anna Straight noted when sending in a contribution, "Cul de Sac integrated into our lives and became the running comedy track for our family." With Richard's blessing, or at least active acquiescence, <b>any money the book makes will go to Team Cul de Sac to fight Parkinson's disease.</b> We initially published this as a print-on-demand book through Lulu in 2015, but after Richard passed away, people have continued to do tributes to him and the strip, and we were glad to take the opportunity to add over 100 pages of artwork and interviews to a new edition. </div><div><br></div> </div> Mike Rhodehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14551914909843150387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-87579596850581031422022-12-06T11:38:00.002-08:002022-12-06T11:38:00.170-08:00We haven't even printed CCDSv2 yet, and we're missing stuff<p> I had to go back on the Art of Richard Thompson FB page, to look up info for Diego's tribute post, and discovered that we left out a Fleabag Theatre, and 2 comic strip tributes in Betty and <a href="http://www.scaryterrysworld.com/2016/12/rex-morgan-11-27-16-to-12-18-16t.html" target="_blank">Rex Morgan, MD.</a></p><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjURJMdbf4lWM5HhQfq58fUzQ9lGVFx-lr3Uvj57GKlJhctidO-AMKlDsMbgBIBK1-vuxobBk3CCPcoYl_dp81px_D5CB6YzEh-YK9VZ27BihV6euaH3_QkEofwKmylkhOE1s8TGqnYfLYlUeWoGW28P81GQFd9diI82QZdOnRgXqa4EEmAa3hkU1YJ/s1008/Thompson%20Fleabag%20Theter%20770325.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="498" data-original-width="1008" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjURJMdbf4lWM5HhQfq58fUzQ9lGVFx-lr3Uvj57GKlJhctidO-AMKlDsMbgBIBK1-vuxobBk3CCPcoYl_dp81px_D5CB6YzEh-YK9VZ27BihV6euaH3_QkEofwKmylkhOE1s8TGqnYfLYlUeWoGW28P81GQFd9diI82QZdOnRgXqa4EEmAa3hkU1YJ/w450-h222/Thompson%20Fleabag%20Theter%20770325.jpg" width="450" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">March 25, 1977</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Print them out and stick them in the book on an appropriate page. Here are the Rex Morgan strips from late November to mid-December.
The first Sunday page is another seasonal stand alone strip. It doesn't advance
the story any -- just establishes the time of year and lets me work on showing
Rex and Sarah and how they relate as father and daughter. And gives us a little
happy moment before the next storyline starts.<br />
<br />
The snowmen are a tribute to the late Richard Thompson, artist of Cul de
Sac and the still-with-us Bill Watterson of Calvin and Hobbes fame.
I just wanted to tip my hat to Richard and acknowledge his remarkable work and
his unfortunate passing. His pal Bill seemed an appropriate addition.</span><o:p></o:p></p><br /></div>Mike Rhodehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14551914909843150387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-90172578537990584762022-12-05T11:09:00.006-08:002022-12-05T12:42:25.484-08:00Ciao, Richard (2016)<p><span face="Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;">Ciao, Richard</span></p>

18:30, the Facebook page “Art of Richard Thompson” published the following few
words by Mike Rhode: <i>Cartoonist Richard Thompson has passed away. I've been
informed by his best friend Nick Galifianakis that Richard passed away today
due to the effects of Parkinson's Disease. We're poorer for his loss, but
richer for his life and art.</i></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span face="Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;">Remembering Richard Thompson, the
immensity of his genius and his humanity, isn’t an easy task. To avoid writing
banalities, I thought that, better than in just my own words, his could be the
best words to remember and describe him. In 2008, when, simultaneously to the
Cul-de-Sac strips, Linus also published excerpts from his blog, we began an
email correspondence that lasted until his illness no longer allowed him to.
His messages were always full of a delicate and smart humor, and I appreciated his
extreme willingness to collaborate with an obscure overseas translator - he,
who was a famous illustrator and cartoonist - that constantly pestered him to
get drawings to publish. A little advisory: as humble and modest Richard was
with respect to his own qualities, so he exalted in an exaggerated way other
people’s qualities, as you can deduce from the lines that follow.</span></p>

famous for heavy traffic jams. It has an Inner Loop and an Outer Loop, and I
just took the second phrase and changed it to Otterloop. I sounded funny, and

strip and work as a whole. She would be delighted to add to your monthly run of
strips in Linus an additional page showcasing your world. I suggested that we
could include some of your blog posts, since they are delightful and full of
your subtle irony. We could put some of your sketches and would-be Cul de Sac
strips, or other features regarding your look on things and stuff. It'd be a
sort of an Italian version of your blog!</span></i></p>

by my sudden adoption by your country, and very proud to be in Linus. I'd be
delighted if you all want to use some of my other stuff, from the blog would be
fine, however it works. Seeing blog posts in print isn't something I'd counted
on; I'll have to start paying more attention to the stuff I post. But I've got
mountains of sketches, false starts and screwed-up drawings in my studio and
using them as blog posts is a good way to turn dross into gold, or at least
into something more useful than dross. We can discuss this and I'm sure we'll
come up with something. I think it sounds cool!</span></p>

since last I wrote you, but 2010 is a terrible year for me, as far as workload
is concerned. I don't remember if I said you about my Gottfredson
tour-de-force. Yes, the complete run of Mickey Mouse's strips and Sundays, 45
years worth of material, to letter in Italian in a 10-month period of time. I'm
so stressed about all that, I really can't enjoy the masterful art of Floyd
Gottfredson! His thirties strips are so... wonderful!!! But deadlines are
horrible, alas! I'm really tired, since I have to work on my usual jobs at the
same time. We are nearly through anyway. I'm completing the 34th book on a
38-book schedule.</span></i></p>

your blog, I see that deadlines are your nightmare, too! Oh, and speaking about
your blog, that's the subject of my message:<o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><i><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="color: #2b4714; font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></i><i><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="color: #2b4714; font-size: 12pt;">since I noticed your
recent innovation in it, that is your commentary on your strips and Sundays,
we'd like to introduce such a feature, too, for the Italian readers of Linus.
My only question is, do you have in mind to keep going with it or was it just a
temporary feature you added? I'm asking you so to avoid to introduce it in the
magazine one month as a regular feature and then, next month to abruptly
interrupt it.</span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><i><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="color: #2b4714; font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span></i><i><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="color: #2b4714; font-size: 12pt;">As months and years
are passing I'm more and more convinced that you are a genius! I'm a fan of

sorry to hear about the terrible crush of deadlines. That is a lot of Mickey
Mouse to translate and letter! I agree about the horribleness of deadlines;
without them I'd get nothing done, but they can make life sheer hell. Those covers
are quite beautiful though, and I hope that once you've finished and they're
all published you can look at the shelf full of Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse
and feel proud of your accomplishment.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span><span face="Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;">As to the blog posts on daily Cul de
Sacs- yes, I intend to keep that feature running, though I've gotten behind in
the last week. I'm hoping to keep it loose enough that if I do miss a few days
I can just do a bunch of them to bring it up to date. It seems pretty popular
with the readers and they're easy to write, as they're more entertaining than
enlightening and accuracy is kind of beside the point. So yes, if Linus would
like to use them that would be great, and it'd be an impetus for me to keep it
going.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span face=""Helvetica",sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;"><o:p> </o:p></span><span face="Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;">I hope all's well with you and

characters. Stefania Rumor, Linus magazine editor-in-chief, called me today and
asked me to ask you a comment of yours about "Peanuts", just a couple
of lines. She's doing the same with other creators that appear in the mag, as
Trudeau and so on. I guess she has in mind to put all those sentences as

thinking about a possible solution to our problem. Do you remember when you
sent me those old early CdS Sundays, that only appeared on the weekly Post mag?
You mentioned that you did 150 or so of those, in the early days. May I ask you

feature a summer theme, it'd be really fine. </span></i></p>
