Not that I didn't really enjoy the Josh Bell piece, but there's no question that the best thing I've read that Weingarten wrote was the Great Zucchini feature.

The Great Zucchini feature issue and the Josh Bell feature issue are the only two Post Magazines that I have kept, rather than recycling. That says something about Gene and his writing, if I'm any judge of such things (and I'm certainly not a Pulitzer judge).

I'm dead-certain sure that I'd stop for Josh Bell because I stop to listen to anyone who's playing classical in the Metro. Maybe not for a long time, but I do stop, and give money if I have any change. It's such a nice little surprise to ascend a long escalator and hear someone sawing away at Bach, even if the violinist is a lesser light than Bell. Or maybe even especially if the violinist is a lesser light than Bell, somehow.Rex Immensae Majestatis Chapmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14767231105426138176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-21045347534408450242008-04-08T04:59:00.000-07:002008-04-08T04:59:00.000-07:00It is a haunting piece. I'd like to think that I'd recognize Bell, I've heard him in concert, but if I was in normal don't-stop-keep-walking mode, who knows?

On the other hand, there's that guy who plays the erhu who's often around the Federal Triangle Metro station, and I stop and listen to him when I see him. But then, I'm not a real commuter.richardcthompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02176282831210054050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-64777559270926298862008-04-07T21:33:00.000-07:002008-04-07T21:33:00.000-07:00That piece got me, emotionally, to a degree that's...That piece got me, emotionally, to a degree that's still surprising — left me kind of stunned for a while after. Glad it got the wide exposure it did. (I saw it on ALDaily myself, not in the Post.)

Congratulations to Mr. Weingarten.paul bowmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17409615610994443652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6346830305687186778.post-67770306651676617722008-04-07T18:30:00.000-07:002008-04-07T18:30:00.000-07:00Yeah, Gene! I especially remember him describing how, without exception, little kids reacted to Bell, pulling back from their parents hands wanting to listen to him.here today, gone tomorrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17203537337770906267noreply@blogger.com
