More Valentine's Day Fun, This Time With Educational Value

This is also a lazy repost, also from the Post mag, this time from Valentine's Day '03. And every word of it is true, or close enough. I was shocked to find out that my editor didn't know that diarist Samuel Pepys' name is pronounced "Peeps", especially as I'd only learned it the day before. I always thought it was Pep-eez, which is actually a stomach antacid. And look, aren't the colors pretty?

Mr. Peep's wife looks as if it is an early rendition of Viola.

I miss Richard's Poor Almanac in the Post. Has it been moved?

I wrote this to the NY Times some years ago. It's about the joy that well written, well drawn comics bring to me. (I know that you were not around then, but it still holds true. I wake up every morning looking forward to Cul de Sac and Lio. Shout out to Mark Tatulli, as well.)

To the Editor:

A June 25 letter about John Tierney's June 21 column, ''The Adams Principle,'' states with some authority that ''the latter stage of life'' should ''prepare us for the diminution of our powers through a focus on compassion, wisdom and good social works.''

Personally, I have found that one of the most delightful benefits of aging is that there are fewer and fewer ''shoulds.'' Thus, I hope that the letter writer will forgive me if I spend my retirement riding roller coasters, reading comic books or doing anything else I please -- which may well include not retiring at all.
