Lio!

My sincere congratulations to Lio for winning the comic strip division Reuben, with some help from Mark Tatulli. Who now owes me ten bucks.
And congratulations to all the other winners, like Mr. Dave Coverly, who won the big shiny ugly statue. I can only hope he has an appropriately ugly sofa to complement his Reuben.

My overall philosophy about awards is that "plaques are for haques" and that anyone who feels they need an award should have one. However, this category was a huge exception -- all three nominees were worthy. All three doing really exceptional work. (Of course, this is the place where I'm saying it. But you're not supposed to read anything at all into that ...)

I love Lio, But CDS is its equal. I believe that newspaper comics have never been better, Cul de Sac, Get Fuzzy, Pooch Cafe, Lio, Pearls Before Swine, What the Duck, Ink Pen, Tom the Dancing Bug, Speed Bump. Bad Reporter, Argyle Sweater, Duplex, Agnes, Monty, and many more. It's a shame what the world is missing.

I also agree that there is a great number of good comics out there, after many years of having the same old crap. Lio was one of those comics that immediately caught me, because of its complete lack of dialogue, something that is not done much, at least not successfully. Cul de Sac has caught me for other reasons, such as the artwork and great characters. It also doesn't hurt that my wife also happens to be named Alice. ;)
